Introducing Kelly Dersham: VARC's New Assistant Director of Client Services

As VARC furthers its mission to provide support and care to those with varying abilities in southern Wisconsin, it has experienced a steady upward trajectory of growth in personnel, a total output of clients served, and a widening of the geographical scope of service. VARC leadership was excited to extend its services eastward to Burlington and Racine this past spring, and is addressing the growing supportive needs of our staff throughout this transition.

VARC promoted Kelly Dersham to the newly minted role of Assistant Director of Client Services this past summer, and we couldn't be more enthusiastic about what's ahead for our clients, staff, and VARC programming at large. With a strong focus on enhancing the quality of programs across the state, Kelly's extensive experience and dedication make her a valuable asset to the VARC team.

Kelly Dersham has been an integral part of VARC for six years, serving as the Program Manager for the counties of Sauk, Juneau, Columbia, and Adams prior to stepping into her new role. Her deep understanding of VARC Client Services programming and commitment to excellence position her well to collaborate with Shelby Neubauer, VARC's Director of Client Services, in furthering VARC's successful expansion and quality of service provision to individuals with disabilities. Her relationship with Shelby is characterized by a dynamic exchange of ideas and a shared approach to tackling a wide range of tasks, from project creation to training and program development.

Under the director of Client Services, the role of assistant director of Client Services is multifaceted, with a primary focus on providing assistance and guidance to program managers, ensuring the smooth procedures of client documentation, addressing staff issues, and upholding the department's standards and effectiveness. Despite the demands of her role, Kelly's enthusiasm for her new position shines through. "I love my new position so far," says Kelly. "We are building a strong foundation with our awesome supervisors around the state, and creating new programs and growth opportunities."

A typical week in the life of Kelly Dersham involves meetings and extensive travel, with regular training sessions in Racine, Burlington, La Crosse, and other locations across the state. Though her primary office is located in Mauston, Kelly embraces a hands-on approach by visiting each division on a monthly basis. Kelly's close collaboration with Program Managers Jennifer Kelley, Micheline Swan, Shanae Zimmerman, and Laura Spaulding, underscores her commitment to fostering a culture of teamwork and excellence within VARC Client Services.

Looking ahead, Kelly sees tremendous potential for VARC's Transition Services Program and Supported Employment initiatives, emphasizing the organization's commitment to strengthening these areas. Kelly's passion for excellence, collaboration, and vision for the future position her as an invaluable leader within the organization. Her tireless efforts to bolster current services and create new prospects underscore VARC's ongoing mission to empower individuals with varying abilities across Wisconsin.
